Energetic and Progressive: Oakville NDP Candidate Diane Downey Brings a Bold Vision to Oakville

Oakville, ON – The Ontario New Democratic Party (ONDP) is thrilled to introduce Diane Downey as their candidate for Oakville in the upcoming Ontario Provincial Election on February 27, 2025. A passionate advocate for equity, affordability, and community-driven change, Diane represents a new generation of leadership—one that is dedicated to putting people before profit.

As a graduate of Sheridan College’s Bachelor in Game Design program, Diane Downey brings a fresh perspective to problem-solving and policy innovation. She also holds a certificate in Creative Problem-Solving and a Bachelor of Arts in English from St. Thomas University. Diane’s diverse educational background, coupled with her lived experiences as a multiply marginalized person, informs her commitment to the fight for justice and democracy for all communities in Oakville and beyond.

“Everyone in Oakville is facing an enormous crisis of affordability, and Premier Doug Ford has made it far worse,” says Downey. “I’m running to ensure that folks in Oakville are heard and that real, lasting solutions are put in place to correct the failures of the current government at Queen’s Park.”

Diane has been actively involved with the ONDP since 2019 and is a dedicated member of multiple equity committees, championing Disability Justice, Indigenous Rights, and 2SLGBTQIA+ advocacy. She understands firsthand how policy decisions impact everyday lives and is ready to fight for a fairer Ontario.

A Platform for Change: Fighting for a More Affordable and Just Oakville

Diane’s campaign is centered on tackling the most pressing issues affecting Oakville residents:

Affordable Housing – Diane will fight to ensure that affordable housing is built for people, not just high-end McMansions for corporate profit. This means the creation of a large-scale public and social housing program and putting an end to zoning loopholes that drive residents out of their homes.

Tenants’ Rights and Anti-Renovictions – The rising cost of housing has left too many vulnerable to displacement. Diane will work to protect tenants from unfair evictions and advocate for stronger rent control policies destroyed by Doug Ford.

Education for All – From junior kindergarten to post-secondary, every student deserves access to high-quality, publicly funded education. Diane will push for better funding, reduced tuition fees, and increased support for students.

Health Care When You Need It – Massive cutbacks to health care budgets by the Doug Ford government have seriously threatened public health in the province. Diane and the Ontario NDP will restore funding to health care and ensure the high-quality delivery of medical services that all Ontarians deserve.

Cost of Living – With food banks stretched to their limits and homelessness on the rise, Diane will advocate for immediate cost-of-living relief, including fair wages, better social assistance programs, and stronger protections for working families.

Improved Transit and Transportation – Diane knows that reliable, accessible, and affordable public transit is essential for Oakville’s growth. She will fight for better investments in local transit to ease congestion and support commuters. Free up the QEW and 403 now!

A Voice for Wage Earners and the Working Class of Oakville

Diane Downey is more than just a candidate—she is a dedicated member of the Oakville community. Having lived here since 2016 with her twin brothers and parents, she understands the challenges that residents face and is determined to ensure that Oakville remains a place where families, workers, and students can thrive.

“With the ONDP, I will make sure that your voice is heard on the actual issues that matter to Oakville,” says Downey. “Better health care, education and more affordable housing. Together, we can build a more equitable and sustainable future for working people in Oakville.”
