The Oakville West New Democratic Party (NDP) is proud to announce Diane Downey as its candidate for the upcoming federal election on April 28, 2025. A dedicated advocate for struggling families, Downey is running to bring a bold, progressive voice to the House of Commons. At a time when Canadians are facing rising costs, housing shortages, and threats to our public health care system, she and NDP leader Jagmeet Singh are committed to fighting for real solutions that put people before profits.
“People in Oakville West deserve someone who will put them first, not corporations and not the ultra-wealthy,” says Downey. “I want to be that voice. The NDP has always stood up for workers, families, students—for everyone—and I will bring that fight to Parliament.”
Downey’s campaign is built on a simple but powerful promise: to protect Canadians against threats to our independence and sovereignty, as well as reckless and harmful tariffs.
“Enough is enough,” says Downey. “We need a government that stands up for Canadians without selling out to corporate interests. The NDP will always fight for fair trade that benefits Canadian wage earners and consumers.”
Downey and NDP leader Jagmeet Singh will also protect public health care, tackle the housing crisis, follow through on affordable, $10 a day child care, expand the federal dental care program, ensure everyone has access to essential medications through a national pharmacare program, and develop fair taxation policies that will help Canadians to afford it all.
“The NDP is the party in the House of Commons with a time-tested record of working for Canadians, and will ensure we have a government that listens to the concerns of everyday people,” she says.
Downey also ran as the Oakville NDP candidate in the recent Provincial election in February, and was honoured to meet and speak with numerous voters during the campaign. “I make sure that I listen to the voices of Oakville,” says Downey. “Because they deserve representation based on fairness, social justice, transparency and accountability, and in Ottawa, I hope to meet those demands.”
The choice in this election is clear: more of the same from the Liberals and Conservatives, or a fresh start and real change for Canada with Diane Downey, Jagmeet Singh and the NDP. On April 28, Oakville West voters have the opportunity to elect a leader who will fight for them every single day.
